“Let the Detroit Derby Girls (www.detroitderbygirls.com) use it for their public games and practice space. Along with that includes an 80+ network of women local to Detroit to help clean, restore, and network for the building. Women from all different backgrounds, that could also use the building as a training facility and to bring junior derby in to Detroit for our youth and coach them to be physically active, as well as other leagues and male teams. In addition, it could be used as a great physical training facility, since I am sure it has plenty of stairs! - Nator”

“"Welcome to Corktown Station" It started with a few entrepreneurial souls and a big dream. Back in 2011, the old Michigan Central Station was an abandoned hulk with no prospect for renewal. That's when Talk to the Station opened up. It rallied the believers and the doers. It brought them together and started the wheels in motion. Today, just seven year's later in 2018, Corktown Station is a beacon for the creative class in Detroit and a revived transportation hub. The Grand Retail Promenade is all hustle and bustle with Slows BBQ at the Station, Mudgie's Taste of Michigan and A...”

Aaron Kieltyka: Very well thought idea, and I like the reference to a Harwell Field (I am assuming you meant the old Tiger Stadium lot, very cool idea as well!) Would love to see your ideas come to fruition. This could be a catalyst for really revving up an already slowly moving regeneration for an area that has seen more than its share of neglect. So much potential not just with the MCS but the surrounding area: Slows, Pj's Lager House, Nemos, Corktown Tavern, etc... as well as Mexican Villages restaurants and store! I think, with the right investors and ideas, you really could help recreate the entire Corktown neighborhood and turn it back into a neighborhood with restoration of all the historic homes as well. New brick roads lined with trees, gardens, coffee shops, bars, cafes, markets, etc all centered around the newly restored MCS. There are enough young, ambitious college grads that would love to move into lofts are homes in that area if it became safe and occupied with a number of others. The seeds have been planted but many are just waiting for more growth to pull the trigger. I really think this project could have MAJOR benefits for the city if the right people spend the money and don't cut corners, I hope and trust that it would earn back ten fold. Love that the seeds have been planted!
Michael McBrien: I love your vision, you paint a great picture. I think you should through out the first ball at Ernie Harwell Field!
Jordan Twardy: This is probably the best vision out there for the station. My idea involves running a dedicated tram from the airport in Romulus to this station, and you've described exactly what I think the building itself could become if that happens.

“First, I would do something creative, like turn it into a train station! I am from Detroit and still have a home there, I have been living in Singapore for the past 4 years traveling all over Asia. I often see things I think are smart and I think about the big D, and how we could do them, would they help? Here goes - big idea - Let's take some federal dollars and get them spent in the next 5 - 10 years to finish the high speed rail between Detroit and Chicago. The last stop heading east will be the Michigan Central Depot (MCD). Then, using high speed magnetic trains (like th...”

Rob Blazoff: I think some of the same ideas when I'm in Kyoto Station.
Aaron Kieltyka: Very cool plan, I hope Ole Matty is paying attention!
Anonymous: What a great idea! Would definitely be awesome to have a way to get from Chicago to Detroit fast, and would be even more awesome if we could have this type of high speed rail linking Detroit to Grand Rapids , too!
Anonymous: Super super great ideas. Now lets get cracking on it!
Anonymous: What about high speed rail to Cheboygan for Mackinac Island too?
Anonymous: Detroit to GR would be fantastic! There is so much potential in Detroit it is sick... we just need the right people with the right ideas to cash-in on that potential! Dan Gilbert could be that man...

“Mass transit centre for both standard and high speed rail, as well as a bus depot and taxi dispatch. There's room to house the offices there, to house any customs needed for rail passengers from Canada, and still to have plenty of space for shopping and restaurants, especially if the first few upper levels could be reconfigured. Offices to support transport above it, and a high end restaurant on the upper level with views out over the city. I totally agree with the anonymous poster who said the interior of the lower level should be restored to its original glory. The office levels are...”

“I grew up in Traverse City and can't help but see a project like The Village at Grand Traverse Commons take shape in MCS. Restaurants, shops, corporate condos, residential space, it would be incredible. And considering the need for new loft living in the downtown area, this would provide a new hub of activity for the city. Seriously, if we could bring Ray Minervini (the developer of the previously-mentioned Village project) down here I think incredible things would happen.”

Carl Gladstone: Just spent a month working out of the Higher Grounds coffee shop and roaster building at The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Everyday I walked around thinking that this would be a great project for some large building(s) in Detroit. Might give impetus for the MCS to become a transit hub if there are shops, offices, and living spaces that people are utilizing. Nice!
Mark Hoffman: I agree - Ray Minervini from TC would be a great consultant for this project. Great guy with incredible vision and a track-record of making things happen!

“It would be nice to see the train station become a transportation hub between Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Canada. It could serve as a lightrail stop to/from Ann Arbor, as well as bus and cab transport. We be nice to have a way to quickly travel from the westside, so it drives more people in for work and fun.”

“I agree with Dean - The Traverse City Commons is a fabulous example of how an old, unused building can be revitalized. There are many different shops and restaurants there and it draws people from all walks of life and would definitely make the station a hub of activity in the city. The size and location are perfect for a mixed use space.”

“I would love to see the station become the future of Detroit's movie industry. It's large enough for multiple movie making businesses. This could be the true "Hollywood" studio of the Midwest. I mean why not ? The station is already known by every movie making company that has ever been here. It's had more pictures taken of it, more movies filmed inside it, and more uses for movie sets than any other Detroit landmark. It's almost begging to be used in the movie making business :-)”

“TedxMCS 2012. A MCS version of the TED conferences in the grand ballroom. Windows and roof repair most likely required (TEDxDetroit here, http://tedxdetroit.com/, for more information of what I'm talking about).”

“How about a mixed use building: offices, apartments, maker & hacker space, incubator space, and: a train station. Right now, however, it would be nice if the building could be occupied by anything or anyone at all. If the lights came on, it would be a dream come true.”

“It seems that Michigan Central is already the hub for a regional commuter rail system -- www.fwrail.org -- I love the idea of using the train station... as a train station! Of course, with new and mixed uses on the upper floors. Transit-oriented development par excellence!”

“Definitely a Train Station again. But not just a train station, a 100% restored version of what it used to be. No modern touches here and there, a 100% photocopy of it former self!”

“Fabulous space for an art museum! There are numerous examples of very successful transformations of industrial/commercial buildings into spaces devoted to art and creation. See for instance the Musée d'Orsay in Paris (a former train station....), the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin (also a former train station) or the Tate Modern in London (a former power plant). It has also been established how much a distinctive new museum can bring to a city/region affected by post-industrial decay and economic hardship in terms of image, tourism, job growth etc. The impact of the Guggenheim Museum on the ci...”

“The building is stunning as it is, and is a Detroit icon. For the time being, take measures to make it safe to explore the inside, and light it at night so it can be seen from a distance. Install gardens and play structures in Roosevelt Park. This would bring the whole area to life.”

“The Detroit Area has begun focusing on Mass Transit again, and the ground level would still serve as an excellent hub for a regional heavy rail system. The upper floors are well suited to a hotel, while the top two levels could be combined to create a ballroom and high end restaurant.”
